Cybersecurity Careers

Companies are on the lookout for talented cybersecurity professionals, and many are struggling to find the qualified candidates they need. Unemployment among IT workers is incredibly low, and not everyone possesses the right combination of skills and experiences to be successful in this field. That means there are incredible opportunities available to those who go the extra mile and ensure they are competent in these areas.

So, if you want to rise to the top of the cybersecurity field, here are some of the skills that will help you get there.

Technical Know-how

Those working in the cybersecurity field need a substantial technical skill set. Not only do you need to understand network architecture, firewalls, operating systems, and software, but you must also be a proficient programmer in languages like Java, C++, PHP, Python, and/or Perl.

Intrusion detection, physical security and risk mitigation are also helpful, along with an understanding of common threats, like social engineering and phishing. Some companies may even need you to have database modeling, VoIP, mobile technology, or other niche areas too.

Precisely which skills you’ll need can vary from one job to the next, but having a broad skill set makes it easier to succeed.

Presentation and Communication

Cybersecurity professionals often must convey complex information to people who are less familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the field, such as members of management and end-users. Being able to clearly articulate these points to others, both in writing and verbally, can set you apart from the rest of the pack, as well as being comfortable presenting to large groups, such as at meetings. Additionally, being an active listener is also helpful, as it ensures you can fully gauge a customer’s needs and concerns, allowing you to address them appropriately.

Communication skills are also imperative as it helps facilitate collaboration and teamwork. Few cybersecurity professionals work alone, so being able to discuss important issues with your coworkers and work as part of a larger whole on high priority tasks is ideal.

Methodical and Inquisitive Mind

Being a cybersecurity professional often means you’ll spend a significant amount of time analyzing data, running diagnostics, identifying problems, and finding solutions. To do this effectively, you need to be incredibly detail oriented and be able to work methodically using defined procedures. A curious nature can also be beneficial, as it helps these tasks to feel more like puzzles or hunts, and ensures you remain eager when it comes to staying on top of developing trends and new threats.

An inquisitive mind also allows you to dig deep into pressing technical questions and consider issues from multiple angles. Since threats are constantly evolving, possessing such a mindset can make it easier to set yourself apart from the crowd.
